After years of overcrowded classrooms, and an uncomfortable share of students who didn’t seem to try any more, Mrs. Edwards had resigned herself to providing the best help she could for her students. But it wasn’t much - 30 minutes of drop-in time 3 times a week for 160 students was less than 40 seconds per student per week. Perhaps that made it a blessing that few students dropped by for help, though it didn’t seem that way. Parents - the ones that cared - seemed to expect that their student was getting regular, personalized feedback. They were hoping their students would receive regular comments on homework, class assignments, and corrections on quizzes and tests. They didn’t seem to get that if she spent just 5 minutes per student on just the quizzes and tests, she’d be working all weekend, every weekend. There just wasn’t enough time - and for the students who were struggling that wasn’t nearly enough. Hopefully they’d get the help they needed elsewhere - or find a way to help themselves.

One day one of her students came to her with a problem set from Epiphanie - an AI math tutoring site. Was this another one of those websites that does students’ homework for them? The last thing students need is another way to avoid learning the material by having it completed automatically. But looking further Epiphanie was helping them solve the problems themselves. With customizable and individual feedback on their homework, it helped them see where they were making mistakes. She suggested it to her class and some of the students started trying it - she found that they made unexpected progress in the class compared to previous performance, and she was able to get a quick summary of where they were making mistakes.

Surprisingly, most of the mistakes weren’t in the current material! It was foundational math - exponents and solving linear or quadratic equations, or even basic math like adding fractions or sign errors. Seeing where the mistakes were happening, allowing her to provide assignments to help where students were having trouble. Epiphanie even provided insight into the types of mistakes across the entire class! Mrs. Edwards felt like she was able to really teach again, not just push assignments from the curriculum to a gradebook. Now if only it could help grade tests and quizzes…
